Family Constellations: what they are and how they can help
A simple and honest explanation of Family Constellations, Bert Hellinger's approach that reveals patterns hidden in the family system.
When a person repeats the same pattern in relationships, or lives with a professional block they cannot name, or carries a sadness that is not quite their own, the answer often lies not only in their individual story. It lies in the family system.
Where Family Constellations come from
Family Constellations were developed by the German psychotherapist Bert Hellinger in the last decades of the twentieth century. They rest on a simple observation: we belong to a system, the family, and that system has its own laws. When those laws are violated (through exclusions, early deaths, injustices, secrets), the following generations tend to unconsciously repeat or compensate for what was left unresolved.
How a session unfolds
It can be done in a group or individually. In the individual format, we use figures or markers to represent the members of the system; in a group, chosen participants take on that role. As the configuration takes shape in the space, dynamics that were hidden become visible. The therapist guides the process, suggests resolving sentences and movements, and helps the person find a new place within their system.
Who it makes sense for
- People who repeat patterns in relationships, work or health without understanding why
- Those going through difficult grief, separations or processes of forgiveness
- Those who feel a sadness or weight that does not seem to belong to their own story
- Those who want to honour their roots and free themselves from invisible loyalties
What to expect
A constellation does not solve everything in a single day, but it almost always brings an important inner shift. Many people describe it as "something settled". The changes are noticed in the following weeks and months, in the way you relate, decide and inhabit your own life.
